Birds fly around with you
Birds Fly Around with You, created by the Japanese light artist Masamichi Shimada, is an interactive licht sculpture which will enchant young and old and be on their minds for a long time. The work is based on the zoetrope, a pre-film animation device, consisting of a cylinder which is spun at a certain speed. Looking through the slits in the cylinder, you see a figure moving. Masamichi Shimada has taken this simple principle out of its casing and put it here as a larger than life-size object.
A visitor who enters the garden will activate the magical machine. The birds illuminate one by one, giving the illusion that they are flying. The more visitors come into the garden, the more birds will fly around. A technical miracle which has been developed, designed and programmed by the artist himself. Masamichi Shimada’s first concern however, is the playful character of his work. Not surprisingly his childhood is his biggest inspiration. His first experience with light art, he says, was the time when he looked through the window as a child and saw the sunlight being filtered by the foliage of the trees. All his works, whether they are lamps for your home or gigantic light jewels, are as imaginative as the project in Amsterdam, and Birds Fly Around with You fits seamlessly into his oeuvre. ‘To me this work is like a playground and I advise everybody to bring their friends or make new ones here.’
The Japanese motion designer Masamichi Shimada is interested in controlling the light. With his interactive artworks, he attempts not only to exhibit beautiful images but also to enhance the life of the viewer. His motto is “creativity to make smiles”. Next to this he creates work using illustrations and stop motion animations.
