The Light Kite

With The Light Kite the collectiveTijdmakers transports the feel-good sensation of summer to winter. ‘We associate the kite with sun, summer, light and warmth,’ says the artist duo Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands and Saskia Hoogendoorn. ‘When you see it, you are automatically taken back to the summers of your youth, to the days when you had all the time in the world and could fly a kite without end. This makes the kite into a universal symbol of friendship & freedom.’  

With their work the duo wants to change the perspective of people by having them look at things in a new way. They already managed to do so last year at the Amsterdam Light Festival with 178 Bottles, 1 Message, a luminous heart, consisting of as many bottles as there are nationalities living in Amsterdam. It became one of the public’s favorites of last year’s edition and was also awarded the honorable mention of most photographed work. That The Light Kite will be photographed innumerable times is beyond dispute. The work can be seen from afar. What’s more, most Dutch visitors will have another inescapable association: whoever sees a kite is bound to be reminded of the famous Dutch song with that title by the popular singer André Hazes. Thus in this year’s editition Tijdmakers visualizes a piece of the Amsterdam DNA once again with their work of light art.

The artistic duo Saskia Hoogendoorn and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands have been creating visual stories and ideas for the past eight years with one goal: to connect and inspire people. Hoogendoorn’s roots are in social psychology and Wijnands is specialized in design and organization management. Based on the principle of social flow, the duo often works together with artists, scientists and experts from various disciplines.
