Amsterdam Light Festival is involved in multiple educational projects. These initiatives allow the festival to increase the participation of the city. Schools in all neighborhood of Amsterdam get a thorough introduction to light art. In collaboration with the festival's educational partner Stichting Schoolbuurtwerk, Amsterdam Light Festival offers workshops for primary, grammar and high school students.
During the 2017-2018 edition of the festival a thousand students and their families had the chance to to learn how you can use light art to tell a story. Children performed an extra realtime layer to the projection by artist Claudia Reh, using sand, pebbles, and miniature cut-out figures. Almost every festival night, a different group of students had their première on the façade of the Hermitage.
Moreover, Amsterdam Light Festival has a long-term collaboration with the Amsterdam Creative Industries Network (ACIN). ACIN was founded by the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, Hogeschool van Amsterdam and INHolland. It explores the interaction between technology, science and art in education, society and business. In the context of this collaboration, students of the Breitner Academie create a light artwork every year that is exhibited during the festival. The collaboration intensifies the innovative character of the festival, and strengthens the bond with the city.
