The artwork that Frederike creates for Amsterdam Light Festival consists of a crypto-wallet-code of light. Crypto currencies are digital coins that form the basis of a new decentralized financial system. This new financial system is at odds with the current monetary system.
Frederike: "Some people predict that crypto currencies might replace the current system in the future. The location of the artwork on the facade of a monumental former bank building aptly demonstrates this tension."
We asked Frederike about her most important source of inspiration: "Modern art inspires me, but daily life as well. I consciously or unconsciously choose things from what I experience and what I see. It can be a shimmer or an interesting subject. The relationship with light is self-evident to me. I am always curious to see how a material, a form or an image works with light and darkness. Research and experimenting are important for me. That's how I often discover new things and a plan can move in a totally different direction."
With her own design agency, product designer Frederike Top designs for both interiors and public space. By means of small interventions that are of great influence, she tries to bring some poetry into the environment for which she designs. She is known for her Street Sentences: a series of poetic texts in the streets of Amsterdam.
