Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam for all ages that shines a spotlight on this beautiful city. The festival takes place in the old city centre and artworks can be admired by either boat or feet. For both routes, we work with official partners who offer tickets or packages.

Illuminade, walking route - Closed as of January 9, 2017!

Illuminade is the Amsterdam Light Festival walking route. Illuminade is opened daily from December 15 2016 until January 08 2017.

The walking route starts at Amstel 3. From Central Station the walking route can be reached by foot, tram or metro. The festival can also be reached by car.

By foot, from Central Station:
The start of Illuminade is a 20-minute walk from Central Station, via the Damrak, Rokin, Muntplein, the Nieuwe Doelenstraat and the Staalstraat to the starting point of the Illuminade next to the Blauwbrug.

By tram, from Central Station:

  • Tram 9 (towards Diemen-Sniep), stopover Waterlooplein 
  • Tram 14 (towards Flevopark Slotermeer), stopover Waterlooplein

Tram 9 and 14 stop in front of the starting point of the walking route at the Blauwbrug.

By metro, from Central Station:

Metro 51 (direction Westwijk), Waterlooplein stop, exit Hortusplantsoen

Metro 53 (direction Gaasperplas), Waterlooplein stop, exit Hortusplantsoen

Metro 54 (direction Gein), Waterlooplein stop, exit Hortusplantsoen

On leaving the station turn left to reach the festival hub at the Hoftuin. Here you can get information and enjoy a variety of refreshments.

CAUTION! Renovation of Waterlooplein metro station started. Elevator temporarily not available!

From 3 October to 2 January 2017, the exit to the Stadhuis (city hall) and the Blauwbrug (bridge) will be closed for commuters. The Hortusplantsoen and Nieuwe Herengracht entrances will be open. The elevator in the station will be out of service due to the construction work. Escalators are available. The closest lift is in the Nieuwmarkt station, by taking the Nieuwe Hoogstraat entrance. It is about 550 meters from the Stadhuis exit.

By car:
From the ring (A10) take exit S-112 or S-116, towards the city center. 

Parking space in the vicinity of the starting point is scarce. Finding a parking space can be time consuming. Parking garages at a small walking distance from the starting point are:
