From fire, to candles and now LED lights, these temporary monumental arches signify the moments in which we come together as a community across the ages. Because of their long tradition they are also an archive of specific tools and techniques, handed down through generations of the same family. Mariano Light, the makers of this work, are one such family.
However, through the lens of Senatore's own practice as an artist and activist, I CONTAIN MULTITUDES is also about our need to congregate and connect in a polarised world. Using the words of Walt Whitman, it echoes a reoccurring truth about our collective identity.
"Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes)"
Senatore's work touches upon the natural seasonal cycles that are the basis of our festive celebrations, such as the solstice, Passover or even including what light festival has become in the winter. And even though it is rooted in an Italian tradition, it resonates with an aspect of culture that is universal today.
I CONTAIN MULTITUDES is a meeting place, reflecting what the nearby Magere brug is to many Amsterdammers, creating a contrast between each country's cultural take on public space. For Senatore, public art is a gift belonging to everyone and through that sense of belonging it strengthens the community.
