Follow the education project of Amsterdam Light Festival Edition 14 here! This year the artwork is all about quantum physics. Together with Quantum Delta NL we bring art and science together in something tangible, fun and a bit magical. Curious how we are going to do that together with 1500 primary school children? Then keep an eye on this blog.
Curious about the ideas the children came up with? Listen below to some of their innovative concepts (recorded in Dutch):
Imagine a world in which we not only understand the wondrous realm of quantum physics, but also use quantum to transform everything around us. That is exactly what ALF Education is focusing on this year with the project Quantumfantum Multiverse, conceived by the artist duo Beeldjutters, Julian and Vincent. This project is not just art, but a scientific adventure that takes children, schools, and visitors into the world of the future. And what kind of future is that? One in which science and imagination go hand in hand.
In this video, Dr. Julia Cramer explains, through five questionsm, the intersection between quantum physics and our society.
The artists of Beeldjutters are no strangers when it comes to creating innovative light artworks that make people think. Julian and Vincent are our guides on a journey through imagination, where they combine science and art in a poetic way. This year, they take us into their vision of the Quantumfantum Multiverse. But what does that actually mean? The word quantum comes from the science that deals with the smallest particles we know. It is a world so tiny it is almost impossible to comprehend, and where everything works differently. Fantum refers to the power of imagination and creativity. And multiverse? That is the idea that there is not just one universe, but that infinitely many different worlds could exist at the same time, where anything is possible. What if, with quantum technology, we could not only influence the smallest particles, but also change our world? In short: welcome to this imaginative and luminous journey in which we explore the future through the eyes of children and their creativity.
Quantum What?! Yes, Quantum Delta! This year, Amsterdam Light Festival has a new collaboration with Quantum Delta NL.
Have you ever seen a light blinking and wondered if it was in two places at once? Or if the light knew something, even before you saw it? Sounds like magic, but it's… quantum physics! And that's exactly what we're going to talk about this year with Amsterdam's youngest thinkers. We're super proud to announce that the education department of Amsterdam Light Festival has entered into a sparkling new partnership with Quantum Delta NL, the organization that knows everything about the mysterious world of the very smallest. Because if you zoom in really deep on light, you end up in a fascinating world: the world of quantum. Quantum Delta NL is like a superhero team of researchers, companies and universities working together on technology that will change our future. But what is quantum physics? And can we use our imagination to create light art about it? Yes! Together with Quantum Delta NL we bring art and science together in something tangible, fun and a little bit magical. Because light is not only beautiful, it is full of secrets. And we are going to discover them together.

And then the moment arrives: the children and their parents sail through the canals of Amsterdam, with the city in darkness as the perfect backdrop for the artworks they helped create themselves. And there, in the distance, the light screens begin to glow: Quantumfantum Multiverse. Flying cars, wondrous medicines, lots of greenery, travel between planets, you see everything the children imagined in an enchanting light show. It is a moment of wonder, because who knows, maybe the future really will look like this. The most beautiful part is that the children have left a piece of their future behind in the city. What they imagined as the future becomes reality in the form of an artwork that lights up the city.
The theme of this year’s festival is Legacy what do we leave behind for the future? What are we doing now that influences the world of tomorrow? Quantumfantum Multiverse is, of course, a perfect example of this theme, but there are also 19 other light artworks that will illuminate the city. And that’s not all: the children who took part in the workshop also receive guide training, together with Juf op Straat. In the lesson Guides in Training, they learn all about the other artworks on display during the festival. Pay close attention, because with the knowledge they gain, the children can then board a boat together with their parents for a guided tour of the artworks. The guides, the children themselves, present their favorite works and share what they have learned about the future, science, and art. It is a real guided tour, led by real children, who experience the magic of light art in a completely new way.
After the exciting quantum show, it’s time for the children to get to work themselves. The class doesn’t just watch, they truly participate. What if quantum technology could make the world a little better? What would the children like to invent for the future? A flying car, a teleportation tunnel, or a solution to climate change? Using tablets and the free animation tool Tagtool, the children get started. They learn to visualize their ideas and create animations of the inventions shaped by their imagination. This is no ordinary drawing lesson; it’s a real animation workshop in which children bring their own visions of the future to life. Best of all? All these inventions come together in the artwork that will ultimately light up the city during the festival. Want to get started yourself? Download Tagtool for iPad and give your own future inventions a face!
The adventure begins with a spectacular show at Theater Amsterdam, a collaboration with Quantum Delta NL. The big surprise of the afternoon? The presentation is hosted by the well-known Klaas van Kruistum and Rachel Rosier! These two stars take the children on a journey to the very smallest of the small. What can we learn from quantum science? How does it work? And what does light have to do with it? Through exciting light experiments and stories, Klaas and Rachel show the children how science fiction can become reality with the right technology. The children not only learn what quantum is, but also how these tiny particles can have such an enormous impact on the future. And they discover that quantum particles can be even smaller than a speck of dust on a grain of sand! It is an experience full of wonder and discovery, and for the children, the perfect beginning of their adventure in the world of quantum.
At Amsterdam Light Festival, we believe that art is not just for children, but should also be viewed and judged by them. That's why we have something super fun: a children's jury! For the educational artist of the upcoming festival edition, we have asked a group of curious, honest and delightfully opinionated young jury members to help decide who the new educational artist will be. Because who knows better what moves children than... children themselves? Together, they will look at the proposals of three different educational artists, ask smart questions and choose the artist who sheds the most light on wonder, creativity and fantasy. In this way, we make room for young voices - and who knows, we might even discover a few future curators! Curious who the children have chosen as their favorite for the upcoming edition? To be continued!

What an edition! The lights of Edition 13 are now off, but luckily we still have the images and you can relive everything one more time... and maybe even discover something new! Watch the aftermovie below of the Edition 13 educational project in which children learned about attention and created the artwork Mind Bridges. We are very proud. Of all the makers, dreamers and daredevils. To all schools, children, partners and everyone who contributed: thank you very much!
