On October 27 2025, Amsterdam will celebrate its 750th anniversary. This will be celebrated grandly from October 27 2024 onwards, until the actual birthday a year later. We celebrate Amsterdam750 with light. With art. With each other. With Edition 13: Rituals.
75 Amsterdammers who are committed to making the city a better place will enjoy a special festival cruise during Edition 13. They were nominated as a 'lichtpuntje' (ray of light) by an acquaintance and will now be in the spotlight themselves. Special thanks to Amsterdam Circle Line.
Expecially for Amsterdam750, three artworks have been placed at an iconic location: het Oosterdok. Spanish artist Javier Riera has transformed this body of water into a canvas for light art. The scale of the projections – what Riera is known for – captures the historical and modern architecture and the water Amsterdam is famous for. All three artworks start a dialogue between the immensity of marine space and the ways in which we relate to it.
Commissioned by the city of Amsterdam, we will develop five permanent light artworks. The city districts of Sloterdijk, Noord, Weesp, Nieuw-West and Zuidoost will be enriched in 2025 with a light artwork that has been created especially for these locations. The designs for the project, which is titled ‘De Stad Verlicht, De Mens Verbonden’ can be viewed below.
In the same week the anniversary kicks off, our annual education project commences, involving 1100 children collaborating with an artist, this year Jeroen Alexander Meijer, to create an artwork that will be included in the art route. The artwork called Mind Bridges, explores how attention can help in a world that sees less and less physical connections.
