Suddenly, Blauwbrug is covered in a mass of moving light dots. On closer inspection, they’re obviously simple spheres. But nevertheless, I’m reminded of a swarm of tiny, living creatures.
In Fireflies, the Dutch artists of Studio Toer share their fascination with the aesthetic impact and vibrant animation of these miniscule winged beetles – as well as the way in which dynamically moving light can convey a specific mood. To realise this work, Studio Toer developed special LED light dots that seem to hover in the air. Thanks to their unique dynamic suspension, each dot follows its own natural and unpredictable trajectory. Soaring and hovering above the water, the dots of light become living fireflies in your mind’s eye. A temporary re-enchantment of the 19th-century bridge.
Fun fact
Did you know that like the dots in this artwork, fireflies can also switch their lights on and off? As a result, each species actually has its own distinct signal. Allowing males and females of the same species to find each other in the dark.
