A grid made up of 104 tubes of light, which have been divided into eight fields. These fields can be used to form eight separate characters: a letter, number or punctuation mark. That’s how Tube Display works, an artwork by Lambert Kamps.
It can show an endlessly morphing succession of eight-letter words. A bit like an old-fashioned alarm clock – but in this case, the characters are formed by pneumatically operated light tubes. They shift in and out of position until they’ve recombined into a new eight-letter word. Horizons, Infinity, Daydream, Gateways – all words that magically appear over time. It may not seem a lot: eight characters, but as they say, true mastery is shown in restraint. ‘Less is more’. But isn’t this a bit too severe? What goes on inside your head if you’re only allowed to use eight-letter words?
Fun fact
What do you see when you look at a rusty old car? Lambert saw a boat. The artist once converted an old English cab into a full-fledged boat in a mere 11 days.
