Thousands of lights and a net from recycled PET bottles, that is what ‘Parabolic Lightcloud’ by the Australian duo amigo & amigo is made of. The result is truly unique!
We asked one of the artists, Simone Chua, about what inspired her: “I’m very interested in how light can change your perception. With all our works I like to use new materials and light to create unpredictable aesthetics.”
But not only the material is innovative. The shape (a parabola) is what makes ‘Parabolic Lightcloud’ so extraordinary. It was based on the Fibonacci spiral, which is omnipresent in nature. The shape is, for example, visible in a cochlea: “We found inspiration in corals and anemones that you see a lot in Australia”, Simone adds.
The colours of the lights continuously change. “We designed the various colour schemes based on psychological research. People tend to have a strong, emotional reaction to different colours”, the artist explains.
That the work was realised with the support of Amsterdam Clean Water and Waterschap Amstel, Gooi en Vecht is no coincidence. Especially the choice of material, recycled PET bottles, was appealing to them. In the end, we all have to make an effort to keep our beautiful canals free of plastic!
