PROGRAMME 13 DECEMBER

★ Lecture 'Nieuwe rituelen in de stad' by Markus Balkenhol (in Dutch)

When: 6.30-7.00 | 7.30-8.00 | 8.30-9.00 p.m.
Where: inside of the Diaconate building, entrance at Nieuwe Herengracht 18

Rituals are not only constantly evolving, new ones also emerge over time. The city, in particular, is a place where this phenomenon is visible. In his lecture, Markus Balkenhol explores two of these rituals: Keti Koti (the commemoration of slavery) and Kabra (an ancestral mask in the Afro-Surinamese Winti religion). What can these new rituals tell us about broader developments in society?

Markus Balkenhol is a cultural anthropologist and researcher at the Meertens Institute. He studied anthropology and German literature at the Freie Universität Berlin and anthropology at the University of Auckland. In 2014, he earned his PhD at VU Amsterdam with a dissertation on the commemoration of slavery in the Netherlands. His research focuses on the anthropology of colonial heritage, memory politics, and religion.
