★ Lecture 'Rituals in the city' by Irene Stengs (in Dutch)

In her talk, Irene Stengs will explore urban rituals, focusing on the question of what (unofficial) rituals we encounter in Amsterdam's public space and what these can teach us about broader societal trends. Examples include ‘spontaneous’ memorials (for traffic or violence victims and fallen trees), bachelor parties (stag and hen do’s), unveilings, birthdays, and parades.

Irene Stengs is a ritual researcher at VU Amsterdam and the Meertens Institute. As an anthropologist, she has been studying traditions, rituals, and popular culture in the Netherlands for fourty years. Her research spans various topics, from the evolution of the Sinterklaas celebration, to the rituals surrounding mourning for national icon André Hazes.

The Antonius Choir has performed in the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhoord for over twenty years. What once started as a parent choir from a local primary school, evolved under the guidance of conductor Patricio Amezcua Zilli to a fully fledged choir. Especially for Amsterdam Light Festival they have made a charming selection of polyphonic Christmas songs about peace, love and understanding.
