Yesterday evening, the start of Edition 14 was celebrated together with our partners, guests and mayor Halsema at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Moreover, a special light artwork was revealed.
Yesterday, the fourteenth edition of Amsterdam Light Festival was officially opened during an evening full of encounters and light. At the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam – a first collaboration between the two institutions – guests raised their glasses together. Newly appointed festival director Dago Houben and curator Pam Toonen explained the new artistic vision and museum director Marieke van Bommel highlighted the unique partnership.
Mayor Halsema, patroness of the festival, quoted Spinoza and referred to Amsterdam as 'the city of enlightenment'. The evening was concluded, in style, with a canal cruise past all of the light artworks.
During the evening, a special light artwork was revealed at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. Especially for the museum, Chinese artist Raven Kwok created Knotted, an interactive light installation that relates to the exhibition Made in China. The installation is inspired by the age-old art of Chinese knotting, where knots symbolize unity and togetherness.
Knotted can be visited free of charge, from 28 November until 18 January in the light hall of the museum. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m. Reservations are not necessary.
The route this year consists of twenty artworks from national and international artists. The theme for Edition 14 is Legacy; what will we leave behind? How do we want to be remembered? These are the questions the artists pose to themselves – and to us.
From 27 November until 18 January, the lights are on every evening from 4.30 until 10.00/11.00 p.m. You can experience the festival by foot, by bike or by boat. In our ticket shop you can find an overview of all the different types of experiences. If you book your tickets directly with us, you support the light art and our foundation tremendously!
