From the first idea to the final exhibition: the preparations take around 15 months. During various phases, we work closely together with national and international artists, designers and architects to realise the artworks especially for Amsterdam.


Artists from around globe submit their concepts

Open Call: November - January

The Open Call marks the start of preparations for a new festival edition: a worldwide submission call for creative light art concepts within a set theme.


A professional jury makes a first selection of light art

Curation & Selection: February - March

Together with our team of curators, a professional jury then makes a selection from the submitted concepts. Some of the criteria that are tested are, for example: the artistic choices, the connection with the theme, and technical feasibility.



Co-creation: April - November

Once the final selection of artworks is made, the development and construction phase begins. Under the guidance of a team of professionals, the artists work towards the exhibition in Amsterdam.

The light art is premiering in Amsterdam

Showtime: November - January

The exhibition premieres in Amsterdam. For a number of weeks the artworks are exhibited in the historic city centre of Amsterdam. At the same time, the new Open Call is released for next year's edition.

The international collection

After the festival has come to an end, part of the artworks will be added to the internationally traveling collection, which is managed by Light Art Collection. A team from this organisation is actively engaged througout the year in finding new exhibition possibilities, making sure the art works and artist get a spotlight in cities all over the world.
