From the first idea to the final exhibition: the preparations for an edition of Amsterdam Light Festival take around 15 months. During various phases, we work closely together with national and international artists, designers and architects to realise the artworks especially for Amsterdam.
The Call for Concepts marks the start of preparations for a new festival edition: a worldwide submission call for creative light art concepts within a set theme.
Together with our team of curators, a professional jury then makes a selection from the submitted concepts. Some of the criteria that are tested are, for example: the artistic choices, the connection with the theme, and technical feasibility.
Once the final selection of artworks is made, the development and construction phase begins. Under the guidance of a team of professionals, the artists work towards the exhibition in Amsterdam.
The exhibition premieres in Amsterdam. For 53 days the artworks are exhibited in the historic city centre of Amsterdam. At the same time, the new Call for Concepts is released for the edition of next year.
After the festival has come to an end, part of the artworks will be added to the collection: Light Art Collection. A team from this organisation works year-round to find new exhibition opportunities to provide artworks and artists new stages worldwide.
