Every year, skating fanatics await with anticipation. Will it freeze, can we skate on natuurijs (natural ice)? Even better, can we skate on the Amsterdam canals? The changing climate has made this magical moment a nostalgic memory, but rest assured, when the canals do freeze over, the urban landscape of the 750-year-old city is transformed into something truly special. The melancholy of that winter moment is embodied in Soyoun Kim's Ice Master House. Floating on the water in the hope that the canal will turn solid. Inside, the ice master is waiting, the skates are ready to be rented out and the wooden chair, used as training aid for children, is ready to pass on this ritual to the next generation. The artwork says: hopefully this unique winter ritual isn't a thing of the past.
