Just as leaves of grass bend with the wind, the little white globes in this artwork sway on their lines. They resemble organic strings of some alien origin. As if the Earth is being populated by some Martian life form.
And we’re not sure what it’s up to… what it’s thinking… whether it even thinks… Apparently it’s content to swing back and forth in the air… so it’s peaceful. For the time being at least.Particle Matters – the name of this work – was made by the American artist Jason Krugman. The kinetic light sculpture uses thousands of dots of reflected light to visualise subtle changes in the night air. Whenever the suspended stainless steel rods and globes are disturbed, rotated or rocked by the nearby wind, this is accompanied by a soft tinkling sound.
Fun fact
Making this work, Jason Krugman drew inspiration from the fields of silver grass that are traditionally planted at memorial sites on the South Korean island of Jeju.
