The leaf pattern in the fencing around the Hermitage Museum of Amsterdam gives this canal a lovely appearance. However, a dark shadow clings to this canal. During World War II, hundreds of Jewish citizens were deported to concentration camps. There, in the side of the canal, right across from the homes in which they thought themselves safe, are the names of their Jewish inhabitants – including their age, and date and place of death. The monument was given the telling title ‘The Shadow Canal.’ The full story will be published soon.
