The effect of Bartholl’s striking pixel wall is made simply with light and shadow; a digital effect in a completely analog way. The standard phone screen contains 460 pixels per inch, 460 tiny little squares tightly packed together. This wall has far fewer squares, 0.12 pixels per inch. All of our digital images are made like this, but we can’t see it anymore. As the smooth edges of our bodies are funnelled through these rigid squares we are all reduced to pixels. Aram Bartholl asks us: what do we lose in the process of digitisation? Do we still recognise ourselves?
