Wilhelmusvlug

Wilhelmusvlug wants to create pieces that challenge, provoke, entertain and unite: artworks that engage with their public. He finds inspiration for his work in nature, music, people and the Netflix-series Chef's Table...

Wilhelmusvlug is both multimedia artist and designer. His work varies from multimedia installations to sculptures, to video art. However, all his projects serve the same purpose: “I want to initiate a dialogue with the audience. No art for art’s sake – I want to create pieces that challenge, provoke, entertain, and unite.”

“I work with light every day, but I’m not a light specialist,” he says. That may sound confusing, but Wilhelmusvlug explains: “Without light, there’s only darkness. If I’m shooting a video, I’m working with light. If I’m rendering a 3D space, I’m working with light. And if I’m designing an interior, I’m working with light too.” Light takes on another meaning when he’s creating a light artwork.

"Light can make something ordinary special, something ugly beautiful, something dull exciting."

"It has the interesting capacity to transform the impression of everything you can see. That makes working with light fascinating for me.” It’s the effect of light on its environment, not the technicalities, that drives him to create light art: “I’m not so much into hardware, programming, wires, and light fixtures – so for this part, I always work with specialists.”

Besides light itself, he draws his inspiration from a broad palette of things: “Music, subcultures, zeitgeist, people, history, and nature, to name a few.” He specifically draws inspiration from the Netflix-serie 'Chef's Table'. "I get a great desire to create from the series. Apart from the fact that the chefs often create amazing dishes the proces of the evolution of these chefs is fascinating to me."

In each episode a chef (to be) tells his story; how he started from scratch en became where he is today. "A process that stands or falls with an incredibly large, often maniacal, dedication and a generous portion of luck, because you also see that it could often have just as easily gone wrong. Unfortunately, there is no comparable series about artists yet."

Wilhelmusvlug is familiar to the festival. We saw his work in several earlier editions.
